Benetton’s very first livery after buying out the Toleman team in 1986 would turn out to be one of their very best. It incorporated the “United Colors” far better than the multicoloured design of the few years that would follow, and integrated it well with the white sections in deference to engine supplier BMW. The brush-stroked nature of the colour flashes suggested “speed” in quite an effective way (few teams since have tried this tactic – the Lucky Strike version of the ’99 BAR is one example that comes to mind, although that was of course muted once they were forced to split it with the 555 livery) and managed to give a bit of grace and fluency to an otherwise uninspiring chassis model. The logo that the Benetton company were using in those days also has a certain retro charm to it – indeed, it’s not the last time we’ll see it grace a car in this list…
