The Top 25 F1 Liveries of All Time : #11

So after this, we’ll have reached the top ten. For that reason, I won’t be posting one tomorrow – instead, I’ll post one of the final ten on each of the weekdays for the next fortnight, starting next Monday. Expect the articles to be a little bit longer, with a few more images, too. But in the meantime – what’s this at number 11…?

I’d imagine that this is one of the biggest surprises of the countdown so far – not just that it’s so high in the list, but that it’s even in the list in the first place. Certainly, Prost’s final year in F1 wasn’t a particularly pleasant one, with multiple driver hirings/firings, a desperate lack of money, and despite points-scoring performance that was an improvement on the wretched 2000, an eventual collapse after the end of the season. Nevertheless, as we’ve seen over the course of this list, out of adversity can still come some of the prettiest cars to grace an F1 grid – and this one is certainly up there. At first glance, it seems fairly simple – a plain blue car, with some red trim, and the bare minimum of sponsor logos. Not through any sort of Ferrari-esque choice, that is – but because they couldn’t attract any. The team didn’t have an official title sponsor (although computer firm Acer lent their name to the engine deal), and the deal with PSN only came about by hiring the awful Gaston Mazzacane. Somehow, though, in spite – or perhaps because – of all this, the car ended up looking classy in its simplicity. There’s something hugely endearing about using the free sidepod space to slap a massive team logo in there – but the most crucial factor is the shade of blue used. It doesn’t really show up in the above drawing, but check out the photo – it absolutely glistens in the light, and makes a pretty mediocre racing car look like a beautiful machine. In fact, you almost wonder why Ligier persisted with such a vapid, lighter blue in all their years, when their cars could have looked like this instead…

Don’t get me wrong, I like All That Glitters, I’m a girl after all.

But funfair ride carriages often glisten in the same way and look totally cheap.

Hi first post here, loving the site. Really enjoyed your list so far so thought I would share my thoughts.

The 2001 Prost is a bit of a surpise, one that didn’t immediately spring to mind. The metalic look is always good, the Jaguars and latest Ferraris have used it to good effect. It’s a shame they didn’t have more white lettered sponser on the car.

    Love the Prost blue!

  4. Mark says:

Is there an official colour code for the blue? I have an option to order my car with any colour and the suppliers name would help.

  5. Rocurs says:

I would call that Gauloises blue (tobacco brand – former title sponsor).

  6. Typhoon says:

You’re telling me that this garbage was a better looking car than any of the Gitanes/Talbot Ligiers of the 80s (1982 is a case in point).

    You’re bonkers, man!

  7. Rodriggo says:

Using your own logo on the sidepod should be grounds for DNF.
